best of albums..

I have lots of 'best of' albums in my collection...CCR..Heart..Billy
Joel, Elton John, The two R.E.M's (BEST OF and Eponymous)..and I am
planing on getting The Who and Led Zeplin and Pink Floyd when I get
around to it....and whoever else that comes to mind. It's just so
convenient when I'm in the mood for a certain group to be able to pop
that cd in and listen to all their best songs...and if U2 comes out with
one I will buy it....but alas some of U2's best songs were not
hitmakers..some were not even released as singles...

Some bands had no plans whatsover to make a 'best of' album only to
have it literally dropped in their laps by the record company. I think
this happened to Def Leppard...they were in the middle of recording one
album and had to stop and promote a compilation..(please update me on
this one...I'm not really in the Def Leppard loop)...R.E.M. really
didn't want to do a 'best of'...but IRS wanted it and it happened..and
R.E.M. reclunctatantly complied...(I think it upset them a bit so they
put something about that in their contract with Warner Brothers)..so
sometimes it's not always the choice of the artist to make one,..however
I have a hard time picturing the label telling U2 what to do...
