Next U2 - what about The Wallflowers?

Hi, everybody!

I'm at a disadvantage here - most of what I'm thinking has already
been said. I agree that the issue is about the next act with an
impact similar to U2. As I see it, the thread goes from
Beatles/Stones to Pink Floyd/Led Zeppelin to Genesis/Queen
(early years, both) to Police/Dire Straits to Depeche Mode/The
Cure (in the 80's they made their mark!) to U2/REM. They have
the music, they have the message, they have the shows. And all
those other bands (except U2, the magnificent exception) started
to fall down when they fell apart (I hope REM will be an
exception, but I fear)!

My current favourite acts are (after U2, of course) Beck, Pulp and
Radiohead. Radiohead is a living proof that there is such thing as
progressive rock in the nineties, Pulp and Beck have the
multimedia expressivity, but we're talking here of an international
audience. And, indeed, they're in their thirties (Beck too?) and
their artistic lifespan is likely to coincide with U2's.

Maybe we must look into the highschool contests to find the new
U2. But let's not go so far! What about The Wallflowers? Jakob
Dylan is surely charismatic (he even won the VH1 contest,
although we know better!), their music seems to have the
necessary depth and meaning, the Boss endorsed them at the
MTV Video Music Awards (like he did with U2 in the 80's). I don't
know about their live shows, but they don't have to be too
sophisticated at this stage - eventually they'll grow.

Anyway, let's hope that the flag will be passed on later than sooner
and to someone worthy!

Far away, so close!
