July 13: concert review
<snip> When Third Eye Blind kicked off its encores at the Nautica Stage
Friday night with a cover of U2's "I Will Follow," the band was revealing
the roots of '90s arena rock, a style of which Third Eye Blind is the
latest hopeful purveyor. With its 1997 self-titled debut the sum of its
catalogue, the group has been touring for a year, working its way up to
playing to a full house at the 4,000-capacity Nautica facility.

July 11: profile of Pavarotti
<snip> The question of size is inseparable from any discussion of
Luciano Pavarotti. Everything about him is big - his body, of course, but
also his personality, his voice, his income, and his global following. Last
night he joined Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras to sing beneath the
Eiffel Tower - the Three Tenors' third successive World Cup appearance, a
record even Pele would envy. The event will be televised tomorrow to a
predicted audience of 2 billion viewers, the biggest TV concert in history.
'I think his size suits him,' says U2's Bono, who sang with him in
Modena in 1995 at one of his Pavarotti and Friends concerts. 'I think he's
a very handsome man, and you reach for words like 'earthquake' and
'volcano'. He wasn't supposed to be thin and weedy. He's big in every sense
- generous, everything. What I like about him is the way the opera follows
him off stage.'

July 11: Polygram's future
<snip> PolyGram unveiled the strongest music video line-up in its
history for this Christmas at its first annual retail sales conference in
Brussels last week. PolyGram Filmed Entertainment's autumn releases
include the first Andrew Lloyd Webber show video and titles from Michael
Flatley, Portishead, All Saints, Boyzone, Spice Girls and U2. The number of
big name acts could provide a hefty boost for UK music video sales, which
last year slipped to a 10-year low of 4m units.
