Rumor: U2 to Announce World Tour Wednesday, Play 4 Shows in Boston

A rumor has surfaced online that U2 will announce their ‘Innocence and Experience’ 2015 world tour on Wednesday, which could include as many as four nights at the TD Garden in Boston. Italian fan site U2place.com first reported the rumors.

As indicated by the rumored dates and venues, U2 is moving from stadiums to arenas on this tour, scaling back the sheer size (and increasing the total number) of individual shows. According to the site, the tour will begin in May with two shows in Vancouver, followed by:

  • 4 shows at the TD Garden in Boston and in Montreal (venue unconfirmed, but likely the Bell Centre)
  • 8 shows at the Staples Center in Los Angeles between May 26 and June 8
  • 6 shows at the United Center in Chicago
  • 8 shows in New York in late July (presumably at Madison Square Garden)

While the rumors are obviously unconfirmed and the site’s source is, of course, anonymous, the amount of details on the tour are striking. It will be known very soon how accurate their information is, but this information is too detailed and specific not to at least raise some eyebrows.
Since U2 famously (or infamously, depending on your perspective) dropped Songs of Innocence onto millions of iPhones, it’s been presumed that they will support the new album with a tour in 2015. But the surprising part, if this turns out to be true, is that the shows will take place in arenas rather than stadiums.

This setup could make their shows more intimate than the gargantuan 360 Tour, and give the band more flexibility and variation with their setlists. U2 famously played three nights at the Worcester Centrum (now the DCU Center) in 1985 on the Unforgettable Fire tour, so perhaps this is the approach the band chose to take.

Once again, this information is entirely unconfirmed and should be treated for what it is, a rumor. Stay tuned for any official announcements.

Frank Barsalona, Remembered by U2 Manager Paul McGuinness

Frank Barsalona, founder of Premier Talent and one of the pioneers of the modern touring business, passed away Thanksgiving morning after a long illness. For a tribute written by Billboard’s Ray Waddell – featuring comments about Barsalona from Irving Azoff, Danny Zelisko, Peter Luuko and many others — we asked U2 manager Paul McGuinness for a quote: and he responded with this touching tribute.

By Paul McGuinness, Dublin

“Trying to get U2 signed to Premier Talent was the reason for my trip when I flew to New York for the very first time in 1980. I was a baby manager but I knew that Premier were the agency that had driven the British Invasion for the Who, Zeppelin and all the great bands. U2 were recording their first album, “Boy,” in Dublin, with Steve Lillywhite producing, for Island Records. When I arrived in New York, I phoned Frank Barsalona’s office for an appointment. They took my number, maybe they would have called back. The next day my father died suddenly back in Dublin. I phoned Premier to say I wouldn’t be able to see Frank that week because I would be at the funeral but I would be back soon. He had to see me when I returned, I was the guy in Ireland whose father had died …
